Master bedroom addition in backyard
1/7
Originally designed by Elizabeth & Winston Close Architects, the owners of this stunning Mid-Century home required additional living space to accommodate their evolving interests and tastes. The clients requested a thoughtful addition to their current interior space and underscored the importance of preserving the 1960-era style that held so near and dear to their hearts
The addition includes a new Master bedroom complete with en-suite bathroom, a full walk-in closet and new office. High windows & a new patio were also incorporated into the tasteful redesign of this lovely home to honor the client's privacy concerns.
Loon Architects worked closely with the family and general constructors to restore and expanded the original house after a tragic fire. The proposed modification included enlarging bathrooms, renovating the basement, adding a third garage stall and incorporating a new roof design.

The owner challenged the architect to add "no new square footage" to this South West Minneapolis home. The interior was customized to an open modern retirement theme. This unique blend of styles kept the charm and scale similar to neighboring homes while opening the interior to connect spaces and capture daylight and landscape views. This view was accomplished by adding daylight with full-height windows to views and connecting rooms by adding flush beams to continue ceiling planes. A new vaulted ceiling was added over the kitchen and family room, capturing sunlight and opening a wonderful view of the integrated backyard landscaping. The final detail was the addition of a new ramp and covered entry, both of which allowed for a no-step entry as part of the overall strategy to transform this home for living-in place.
All foreground space is new to add charm to a home that had been dominated by a turn around driveway in front - building a new garage with side yard access allowed room for luscious landscape, a covered porch, and an overall more inviting entry into the estate. The architect also integrated a new Master suite with inset balcony above the garage to create a generous living space for the couple to unwind.
This seamless addition to a classic Southwest Bungalow sparked new interest among its residents who had outgrow their previous space but loved the neighborhood. As per client's request, the architect added a sunken Family Room to fill the void left by a beloved old screen porch removed to make way for the addition. The powder room was also relocated to open a vista from the existing front entry through the Family Room and the backyard landscape. The final details of the renovation included a Master suite above a modified staircase and an arched corridor below, both of which helped to make a living gem out of a modest home.
With grandchildren bursting from the seams, this Burnsville, Minnesota couple decided to make a change. Having a mature and beautifully landscaped site, the design intent revolved around reconfiguring existing space to take better advantage of natural scenery. A formal entry and updated pantry replaced a tired storage room. The dining room was also expanded to include a new view of the backyard and sitting height windows to the sideyard. Moreover, the design and construction allowed for new ceiling insulation, a complete kitchen renovation, and the addition of an entirely new living space. Together, all the details brought out the original home's charm, making the unit ready for the next generation.

Originally a Phillips 66 gas station in South Minneapolis, this space was transformed into a modern two-bedroom home and office. The daring design and incredible execution earned this project a spot on an episode of the HBO series " Before and After". The architect incorporated exposed wood structures and transparent stains-to-match to give this unit an industrial feel. Moreover, an open balcony that doubles as a reading and study lounge was added in the high ceilings of the old car repair bay and overlooks each bedroom to inject a sense of ease and comfort into the space.

A creative floor plan under the existing roof allowed for the addition of this new Master bedroom plus an entirely new bathroom and walk-in closet. A yoga and sitting room also made its way into the unit, transforming a once cold, dusty, and forgotten attic into a space that screams charming.
